“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”As ever George Orwell was right, he was just 30 years too early.
Politics in 2017 is angry and nasty. Some commentators, especially on the internet, cannot simply disagree with their opponents. They must condemn them as evil and contemptible. Depending on your preferences, your opponents are racists who suffer from various “phobias” and “isms” or they are “snowflakes” and “traitors.” Too many people see their ideas – political as well as religious – as part of their identity; to attack one is to attack the other. I profoundly disagree with this stance and I have tried on this blog to write about ideas not people.
We need to find ways to disagree without resorting to name calling and condemnation. If ideas are suppressed, if some people are forbidden to speak their mind then violence – whether spoken, written or physical – will be the result.
