Who’s the real racist – Boris or his critics?
This post is a reblog of Brendan O’Neill’s thoughts on the ridiculous row surrounding Boris Johnson’s ‘letterbox’ remarks about burkas. O’Neill is the editor of Spiked Online and was previously the editor of Living Marxism, the journal of the Revolutionary Communist Party. The original post can be seen here but I have highlighted what I consider the key points below.
Incidentally, if ‘offence’ is now the standard by which everything should be judged, isn’t confronting Jewish people with swastikas the ultimate in offensiveness? Most citizens of Israel will have lost parents or grandparents in the Nazi genocide – isn’t Holocaust Inversion an unrivaled form of victim blaming? Plus most Israelis are second- or third-generation refugees – the 850,000 Jewish people forced out of countries from Morocco to Iraq are conveniently forgotten by most of the media – so isn’t hounding the state they have created also ‘offensive’?
Nothing in the previous paragraph should be read as support for the State of Israel, its corrupt and unpleasant prime minister or its mad policies in the West Bank. Once again, I simply don’t care about what happens in Israel/Palestine – those idiots will be fighting over who has the best imaginary friend when my great-grandchildren are drawing their pensions.

“The top-to-toe burka, with its sinister, airless grille, is more than an instrument of persecution, it is a public tarring and feathering of female sexuality. It transforms any woman into an object of defilement too untouchably disgusting to be seen. It is a garment of lurid sexual suggestiveness: what rampant desire and desirability lurks and leers beneath its dark mysteries? In its objectifying of women, it turns them into cowering creatures demanding and expecting violence and victimisation. Forget cultural sensibilities.”
No, these words were not written by Boris Johnson but by Polly Toynbee of the Guardian – Behind the Burka. Continue reading “Burkas, Bilge And Boris Johnson”
For about the ten-billionth time, “Islam” and “Muslim” are not synonyms
I’m sorry to return to this topic again (it’s like an itch I can’t stop scratching) but it seems one cannot go more than a couple of days without someone or something being accused of “Islamophobia.” Often attributed to the late, great Christopher Hitchens but in actual fact said by Andrew Cummins, the best way to define this absurd word is…
“Islamophobia: a word created by fascists, and used by cowards, to manipulate morons.”
The fascists in question are the Islamist hard right whilst the cowards are the pseudo-leftists who inhabit the BBC and the opinion section of the UK Guardian newspaper. I will leave it you to decide who the morons are. For the love of all the gods that have never existed, why do people who loudly proclaim their anti-sexism, anti-homophobia and anti-racism support people who are violent misogynists, murderous homophobes and bigoted racists and anti-Semites?
