Quotes Of The Day #11-20

I shall not be posting anything new on my blog for the next six weeks as I am travelling to the UK for Christmas. I have decided to share a list of all the quotes I have posted since 2017.

This is the second part of the list, quotes 11 to 20.

Enjoy.

Quote of the Day #11 – George Orwell

“The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one’s real and one’s declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink… [Language] becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language make it easier for us to have foolish thoughts… But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought. A bad usage can spread by tradition and imitation, even among people who should and do know better.”

Quote of the Day #12 – Christopher Hitchens

“That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.”

Quote of the Day #13 – Carl Sagan

“Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”

Quote of the Day #14 – Gamal Abdel Nasser

This video shows Gamal Abdel Nasser, President of Egypt from 1956 to 1970, making a speech about a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood who demanded that he (Nasser) make it compulsory for Egyptian women to wear the hijab. The transcript of the speech is included in the post.

Quote of the Day #15 – Anonymous (and I would be too)

“God only gives three answers to prayers: 1. Yes! 2. Not yet. 3. I have something better in mind.”

Quote of the Day #16 – George Orwell

“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”

Quote of the Day #17 – David G. McAfee

“Religious people claim it’s just the fundamentalists of each religion that cause problems. But there’s got to be something wrong with the religion itself if those who strictly adhere to its most fundamental principles are bigots and sexists.”

Quote of the Day #18 – C. J. Dennis

“Wowser: an ineffably pious person who mistakes this world for a penitentiary and himself for a warder.”

Quote of the Day #19 – Sam Harris

“These people are part of what Maajid Nawaz has termed the “regressive Left” – pseudo-liberals who are so blinded by identity politics that they reliably take the side of the backward mob over one of its victims. Rather than protect individual women, apostates, intellectuals, cartoonists, novelists and true liberals from the intolerance of religious imbeciles, they protect theocrats from criticism.”

Quote of the Day #20 – Mr Spock

“If this is your God, he’s not very impressive. He’s got so many psychological problems; he’s so insecure. He demands worship every seven days. He goes out and creates faulty humans and then blames them for his own mistakes. He’s a pretty poor excuse for a supreme being.”
